Tampa Police To Assess Firearm Transition

Tampa Police

TAMPA, FL. (July 25, 2025) – – The Tampa Police Department has begun evaluating alternative firearm platforms from various manufacturers, including Sig Sauer, focusing on those with the most updated safety features and proven reliability.

While the department has complete confidence in the skills, standards of training, and equipment of our agency, recent reports and perception of safety issues warrant a proactive evaluation. Even with no absolute and definitive finding regarding the concern of unintentional discharge, the mere suggestion that there may be safety concerns regarding a department-issued weapon becomes a priority for our agency.

The last department-wide firearm transition took place in 2018, previously moving from the Smith & Wesson M&P to the Sig Sauer P320. As was the case in 2018, and each previous firearm change, any transition will be a deliberate and phased process, including comprehensive training for all affected personnel to ensure a seamless and safe integration of any new equipment.

The department expresses appreciation to Sig Sauer for their dedicated efforts over the years to ensure the safety and reliability of their equipment, including their voluntary upgrade program for the P320. The Tampa Police Department has diligently ensured all our issued Sig Sauer P320 firearms received this upgrade, and we commend Sig Sauer for offering this important initiative.

“This evaluation reflects our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement and maintaining the highest standards of safety,” added Chief Bercaw. “We are committed to providing our officers with the most reliable and safest tools. They deserve it, and so does the community they protect and serve so bravely every day.”
