Tampa Police
The Tampa Police Department concluded its comprehensive Memorial Day weekend enforcement efforts, Operation: Zero Proof, which focused on ensuring safe roadways and waterways throughout the extended holiday weekend. The initiative, which ran from Friday, May 23, 2025, through Monday, May 26, 2025, aimed to reduce impaired driving and boating incidents. The Tampa Police Department made 40 DUI arrests in 2024.

The proactive enforcement conducted as part of Operation: Zero Proof resulted in :

  • 27 DUI arrests
  • 442 traffic citations
  • 856 traffic warnings
  • 58 vessel (boat) stops
  • 18 boating citations
  • 33 boating warnings
Notably, there were zero arrests for boating under the influence (BUI) during the long weekend.

Prior to the holiday, the Tampa Police Department reminded the public to celebrate safely and responsibly, both on the roads and on the water. The department increased patrols as part of Operation: Zero Proof with the goal of preventing impaired driving or boating incidents. The department also encouraged the use of designated drivers, rideshare services, or public transportation for safe travel and reminded boaters to follow all safety regulations, wear life jackets, and remain sober while on the water.

“I am incredibly proud of the efforts of our officers and the significant reduction we have seen in DUI arrests this Memorial Day weekend,” said Chief Bercaw. “It shows that our public awareness campaigns and increased enforcement are having an impact. However, the fact remains that some still choose to drive under the influence, and the devastating consequences of those choices are profound. We mourn the loss of one community member and acknowledge the life-altering injuries sustained by another, all because of someone’s reckless decision to get behind the wheel impaired. Our commitment to ensuring safe roadways and waterways remains unwavering, and we will continue to work tirelessly to prevent future tragedies.”
