Suspects Charged in Fatal Shooting on Calumet St

Houston police have arrested two juvenile suspects in the fatal shooting of a man at 2520 Calumet Street about 8:55 p.m. on January 20.

The juvenile suspects, both 14, were referred to the Harris County Juvenile Probation Authorities on a charge of capital murder. Names and photos of juvenile suspects are no releasable.

The victim is identified as James Tolen, 41.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeant C. LaFour and Detectives M. Althaus, R. Waterwall and L. Lovelace reported:

Officers responded to a robbery call at the above address and found a male suffering from a gunshot wound. Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced him deceased at the scene.

After speaking to a witness, detectives learned two armed suspects approached the victim’s vehicle and attempted to rob them. The victim and the passenger complied with the suspects’ demands and exited the vehicle.

The suspects realized the vehicle would not start and approached the victim again for the key. A physical altercation ensued and a suspect fired his weapon, striking the victim. The suspect then fled the scene on foot in an unknown direction.

Further investigation identified two juvenile suspects in this case. Investigators spoke with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office who accepted charges of capital murder. As of today (March 19) both suspects are in custody.
