Suspect Nabbed in Wheeler Ave Fatal Shooting

A suspect wanted and charged in the fatal shooting of a man at 2599 Wheeler Avenue about 2:35 p.m. on April 4 is in custody.

The suspect, Derrick W. Foster, 41, is charged with murder in the 482nd State District Court. A booking photo of Foster is attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Melvin Jackson, 43.

HPD Homicide Division Detectives G. Rangel and H. Montealegre reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to a shooting call at the above address and found an unresponsive man with a gunshot wound lying in the roadway. Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and pronounced the man, later identified as Mr. Jackson, deceased.

A preliminary investigation determined the shooting may have resulted from a prior argument at a nearby convenience store.

At that time, there was no known suspect description.

Further investigation identified Foster as the suspect in this case. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office was contacted and Foster was subsequently charged.

On Tuesday (April 15), Foster was arrested by deputies from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office without incident. Foster was then booked into the Harris County Jail.
