TAMPA, FL. (October 7, 2025) – – The Tampa Police Department is investigating an in-custody death that occurred near N Ashley Dr and E Whiting St just after 8:00 p.m.
Based on the preliminary investigation, the suspect, an adult male, was arrested for charges related to an ongoing investigation. While speaking to officers, the suspect, while still in handcuffs, pulled away from officers and escaped by suddenly running from them on foot.
While the suspect continued to flee, one officer deployed their taser and the suspect subsequently fell into the road onto oncoming traffic.
A vehicle fatally struck the suspect, and he was pronounced deceased on scene.
The driver of the car did stay on scene and is cooperating with the investigation.
Per policy, FDLE will take the lead on the in-custody death investigation. The Tampa Police Department Traffic Homicide Unit will investigate the crash.
An internal investigation will be conducted to ensure the officers involved adhered to all department policies and procedures.
N Ashley Drive is closed between E Jackson St and E Whiting St to allow for the investigation.
