Suspect Charged in Fatal Crash on W. Lake Houston Pkwy

Charges have been filed against a suspect arrested in a fatal crash that occurred at 1700 West Lake Houston Parkway about 5:45 p.m. on Sunday (July 13).

The suspect, John Nathan Dool, 40, is charged with two counts of intoxication manslaughter in the 263rd State District Court. A booking photo of Dool is attached to this news release.

The victms are identified as Curtis Van Diest, 60, and Catherine Van Diest, 66.

HPD Vehicular Crimes Division Sergeant P. Lee and Officer C. Song reported:

A white Dodge Ram 1500 pickup truck was traveling westbound at the above address at a high rate of speed. A white Cadillac XT5 was traveling northbound in the 4500 block of Magnolia Cove Drive. The Cadillac had stopped at a stop sign. As the Cadillac pulled out of the stop sign, the Ram struck it, pushing the vehicle several feet. The Ram the struck a pole and landed on its side.

Paramedics pronounced the male driver and female passenger of the Cadillac deceased at the scene.

The driver of the Ram, Dool, was transported to an area hospital in stable condition. He was determined to be impaired. Investigators consulted the Harris County District Attorney’s office and he was subsequently charged.

The investigation is ongoing.
