TAMPA, FL. (September 9, 2025) – – Tampa Police Detectives have made an arrest in an August hit and run investigation that left a bicyclist with serious injuries.
“Hopefully, this will arrest will provide the man left injured with a sense of justice,” said Chief Lee Bercaw. “Thanks to outstanding and dedicated investigative skills combined with the strong partnership we have with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect in this case will be held accountable.”
On August 27, 2025, Tampa Police began investigating an early morning hit & run after reports that a silver SUV had struck a bicyclist on Dale Mabry Hwy near Mango Ave. The victim, an adult white male in his late 40s, was transported to a nearby hospital where he was treated for critical injuries. He has since been released from the hospital and continues to recover.
The suspect, later identified as 33-year-old Derrick Bass (BM 8/22/1992), was driving a silver 2019 Chevy Equinox and fled the scene after the crash. The SUV was later found abandoned in the 2200 block of E. 12th Ave. and was impounded as evidence.
Detectives gathered evidence and developed leads to positively identify Bass as the driver of the SUV at the time of the crash, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.
On September 8, 2025, Bass was located by deputies with the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office and arrested at 7402 N 56th St. without incident. He was transported to Orient Road Jail, charged with Leaving the Scene of a Crash with Serious Bodily Injury; and Driving While License Canceled, Suspended or Revoked (Death or Serious Bodily Injury) for the incident on August 27. He faces two additional counts for Violation of Probation.
