Armed Man Shot Near Washington Monument

U.S. Secret Service officers shot an armed man on Monday near the Washington Monument after he fired at agents and wounded a juvenile bystander, officials said.

Officers patrolling the outer perimeter of the White House complex spotted “a suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm,” Secret Service Deputy Director Matt Quinn told reporters.

The man fled when uniformed officers approached and fired toward them, Quinn said. Officers returned fire, striking and wounding the suspect.

The man, believed to be a 45-year-old white male with ties to Maryland and Texas, was shot in the torso and taken to a local hospital, where he was listed in stable condition, according to a law enforcement source familiar with the investigation.

Authorities are also examining whether the suspect may have attempted to access a White House entry point earlier in the day, the source said.

A juvenile bystander struck during the incident was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Police said the individual suffered a graze wound.

No Secret Service personnel were injured.

The incident occurred several blocks south of the White House. Vice President JD Vance’s motorcade passed through the area shortly before the shooting but was not affected, Quinn said. A source added the motorcade was diverted as a precaution while security teams assessed the situation.

President Donald Trump was at the White House at the time and was not in danger, officials said.
