Second Suspect Charged in Fatal Braeswood Shooting

Charges have been filed against a second suspect arrested in the fatal shooting of a man and wounding of another at 5410 North Braeswood Boulevard on May 24.

The suspect, Miles Julian Edwards, 19, is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 339th Criminal District Court.

Another suspect, Zion Armon Mitchell, 18, is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a deadly weapon in the 482nd and 183rd Criminal District Courts, respectively. Booking photos of Edwards and Mitchell are attached to this news release.

The victim is identified as Kenneth Leaks, 18.

HPD Homicide Division Sergeants J. Nielsen and A. Lopez and Detectives K. Hale and C. Bowling reported:

HPD patrol officers responded to Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital after a male was admitted with a gunshot wound. Officers learned a private vehicle transported the victim to the hospital. They were informed the shooting incident occurred in the parking lot of an apartment complex at the above address.

Witnesses told investigators the victim was meeting an individual at the complex for a transaction. The victim was inside a vehicle when he was approached by several black males. During the exchange, one suspect retrieved a firearm and shot at Mr. Leaks, striking him at least one time.

Another male, 17, struck by gunfire suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Further investigation identified Mitchell as a suspect. On June 16, he was arrested by HPD Southeast Patrol Division’s Crime Suppression Team and was booked into the Harris County Jail.

Investigators also identified Edwards as a suspect in this incident. Officers with the Southeast Patrol Division’s Crime Suppression Team arrested him on Aug. 28. He was subsequently charged and booked into Harris County Jail.
