Houston police are investigating the fatal shooting of an armed male suspect by an HPD officer in the 4800 block of Wayne Street about 2:20 p.m. Sunday (January 11).
The identity of the deceased male is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Officer I. Lagunas, who discharged his duty weapon, was not injured in the incident. He was sworn in as an officer in August 2023 and is assigned to the Northeast Patrol Division.
HPD Homicide Division Special Investigations Unit Detectives D. Davis and A. Garcia reported:
Officers responded to a suspicious person with a weapon attempting to force his way inside a residence at the above address. Upon arrival, officers located a male outside of the residence in an empty lot and armed with a firearm.
The suspect refused to obey officers verbal commands to put down his weapon. The suspect was acting erratically, refused to put down the weapon, and at one point put the firearm to his head. During the encounter, an officer discharged their weapon towards the suspect. An autopsy will determine manner and cause of death.
As is customary in officer involved shooting incidents, the case is being investigated by the HPD Homicide Division, HPD Robbery Division, the Internal Affairs Division and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
