Houston Police are investigating the fatal shooting of a woman that occurred at 4000 Griggs Road about 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday (July 15).
A female suspect, Amber McNulty, 43, is charged with felon in possession of a weapon in the 209th State District Court. A photo of McNulty, who is not charged in the fatal shooting at this time, is attached to this news release.
The identity of the deceased female, 75, is pending notification to family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.
HPD Homicide Division Sergeant S. Jimenez and Detectives D. Higgs and C. Bowling reported:
Officers responded to a report of a shooting at an apartment complex at the above address and found the victim suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Responding Houston Fire Department paramedics pronounced the victim deceased at the scene.
Further investigation revealed the victim was known for collecting aluminum cans and was collecting cans that had been set out for her on an apartment porch by a resident. The suspect, who lived in the same apartment as the person who set out the cans, saw the victim collecting the cans and put on a ballistic vest, armed herself with a gun, and began firing a weapon through the apartment window at the victim. The suspect stated she felt she was in danger and was trying to protect herself.
The suspect, identified as McNulty, was detained without incident. After speaking with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, McNulty was charged with felon in possession of a weapon. Additional charges by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office are pending further investigation by HPD.
