Dallas Police Central Business District (CBD) officers on routine bike patrol in the downtown area on August 28, 2025, found a mother and her two sons sitting on a bench in the 1000 block of Main Street. As the officers spoke with the family, they learned the family had just lost their housing and had not yet found a shelter for all three of them, as well as the bags they were carrying – everything they owned.
The officers recognized the urgent nature of this family’s situation and began connecting them with much needed resources. First, the City’s Office of Emergency Management and Crisis Response was contacted, who coordinated with Family Gateway to provide shelter for the mom and her sons, along with a safe place to store their belongings.
Then an officer asked if they had eaten, and the mom quietly explained their last meal was the day before, and she didn’t have enough money for food that day. The officer took it upon himself to personally bring them food from a restaurant nearby, before officers drove the family to Family Gateway for further assistance.
“I commend these officers and our partners at Emergency Management and Crisis Response for the compassion and professionalism shown toward this family,” said Major John Madison, commander of the Central Business District Patrol Division. “While this incident did not involve a criminal matter, it represents the commitment our CBD division has toward serving all members of the downtown and CBD area.”
This is documented under incident number 25-1531219.
